Auto GPS ( Global Positioning Systems ) help drivers get to a destination suggesting driving directions during the trip.
These devices show a dynamic map of the road your following, be it a city street, a country road or a highway. They also give you indications to reach the nearest gas station, restaurant, local points of interest and more.
A voice ( often customizable with male or female voices ) alerts the driver when he needs to turn, exit a highway or enter a roundabout.
Most GPS systems today have clear and easy to follow color maps displayed on standard or wide touchscreens.
Some GPS systems automatically recalculate the route to the destination in case of traffic.
Some models have very interesting features as integrated bluetooth to connect to your cell phone, theft prevention and allow you to hear the voice through your car stereo system.
Skeptical people are those who are mostly impressed by GPS systems and often woulnd't drive without one after they try a GPS navigation system.
Some cars have integrated GPS systems. They are built in as part of the dashboard hence you can't replace the integrated one as you would do with an external GPS device.
This kind of GPS system is usually very expensive and you must decide if to buy it when you're purchasing the vehicle. These systems are obviously the less invasive and better looking.
Moreover updating maps on these systems isn't easy as on portable ones.
Some GPS systems fit in a car stereo DIN (the space where you install a standard car stereo has a fixed size, and some navigation systems are exactly that size and include a car stereo system).
The screen is usually as wide as the DIN and slides out of the system.
Some of these systems include a DVD player and other kinds of media entertainment systems but they are a lot more expensive than portable units.
External portable GPS units are by far the most common and convenient ( you can use them on more than one car ).
Today prices have lowered a lot and you can find incredible deals online on GPS systems.
